Java Settings

The recommended configuration of your Java settings will depend on the internet browser that you are using, so please skip to the relevant section below.

Do I have the JVM installed?

Internet Explorer

Select Internet Options from the Tools menu and press the Advanced tab. Scroll down and look for a section called either 'Java (Sun)' or 'Microsoft VM'. If either of these appear then you have the JVM installed.

Netscape, Mozilla

Go to the Web Development item on the Tools menu and look for a section called 'Java Console'. If this section appears, you have the JVM installed.

Safari

Select Installed Plug-ins from Help menu. If the Java Plug-in is listed then you have the JVM installed.

How can I install the JVM if I need to?

If you use Internet Explorer, click here for the latest version of the Microsoft VM.

If you use Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox or Safari, click here for the latest version of Sun Java.

What should my Java settings be?

Internet Explorer

Select Tools > Internet Options from the browser menu, then click on the Security tab and press Custom Level. Then scroll down until you see the following sections:

> Microsoft VM
If you see this heading, please tick the boxes next to: 'Java console enabled', 'Java logging enabled' and 'JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled'.

> Java (Sun)
If you see this heading, then please ensure the box below it is ticked. If, however, you have the Microsoft VM as well as the Java (Sun) option, then please enable the Microsoft VM options above but disable the Java (Sun) options.

> Scripting
Select the buttons for Enable under 'Active Scripting' and under 'Scripting of Java Applets'.

Then click OK, and close and re-open your browser to activate the changes.

Netscape, Mozilla

Select Preferences from the Edit menu, then click on Advanced. Tick the boxes next to 'Enable Java' and (if it appears) 'Enable native object scripting'.

Firefox

Select Options from the Tools menu and press the Web Features button. Tick the boxes next to 'Enable Java' and 'Enable Javascript'.

Safari

Select Preferences from the Safari menu, and press the Security button. Then tick the boxes next to: 'Enable plug-ins', 'Enable Java' and 'Enable Javascript'.
